A sub micron filter like the .5 filter in the middle of this system will also be able to catch and filter out some of the iron precipitate that can be in water.

What you are seeing is scale, this is a buildup of minerals inside of your water heater, calcium and magnesium are usually the primary minerals but it is probably others as well. According to Camco, the # CAM40206 drinking water freshener wouldn't remove chlorine. It's more designed for mold and mildew. A disposable filter like # CAM40043 would work much better than the freshener.
The filter does its job in the amount of time it takes the water to pass through it. The filters are disposable, and considered to be good for 6 months or one camping season. Replacement filters are available as part # CAM40045.
